Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic Therapy is a term that is used for combination treatment. A chemical, called Levulan, that is light sensitive, is first placed on the skin and left to incubate for about one hour. After this time, your skin is placed under a light source which can be the Blu-U light or Intense Pulse Light. This treatment has three main uses;

This is an amazing treatment for acne. One to three treatments, depending on the severity of the acne, can almost totally clear the face of acne lesions. Initially there can be some flaking and peeling of the skin but the end result is very pleasing. This can be a huge boost to the self esteem of adolescents.

Actinic Keratoses

Actinic Keratoses (AKs) are rough-textured, dry, scaly patches on the skin, caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet light such as sunlight. They occur most frequently on sun exposed areas such as the face, scalp, ears, neck, hands and arms. They form on the outermost layer of skin and they can range in colour from skin toned to reddish brown. They can also range in size and are more common in fair skinned individuals. AKs are considered to be the first step in the development of a type of skin cancer, having the potential to progress to squamous cell carcinoma which is generally not life threatening, especially if caught early. Treatment with Photodynamic Therapy with Blu-U light is very successful at treating AK.

The use of Levulan with Blu-U can have dramatic effects on the appearance of aging of the skin. In the case of someone with a lot of red areas on the face, we would use Intense Pulse Light. This treatment will remove many of the brown and red spots as well as create a brighter skin tone and slightly tighter skin.
