These courses were held in Abbotsford with Dr. Haneef  Alibhai as the trainer. This is part of the Diploma in Aesthetic Medicine programme that is being organised by the Canadian Association of Aesthetic Medicine. This kind of programme will eventually give credibility to those physicians properly trained in the provision of Aesthetic services.

May 2012

On 6 May Dr. Balharry attended the Allergan Academy Regional Symposium. There were excellent presentations by Drs. Arthur Swift from Montreal, Jason Rivers and Ashwani Singh. Also, Dr. Janis Campbell from Calgary did some live demonstrations of newer injection techniques for Botox and Juvederm facial fillers. Allergan do a great job of providing educational programmes for physicians to maintain their skills and to learn new skills from innovators in the realm of cosmetic treatments. This speaks highly of the company and of the confidence in its products.

On 27-29 April, Dr. Balharry attended ‘Summit in Phlebology’, sponsored by the Canadian Society of Phlebology and held in beautiful Kelowna, BC. This allows Dr. Balharry to keep abreast of the most recent developments in treatments of venous disorders.

Also, at this meeting, Dr. Balharry received the honour of being granted a Fellowship in the Canadian Society of Phlebology

Dr. Balharry was in Toronto on the 18th of this month, training with Dr. Steve Mulholland on the use of BodyTite by Invasix. Nov & Dec 2011

Dr. Balharry has attended two conferences recently. The first, held in Vancouver, was a meeting of the Canadian Association of Orthopaedic Medicine, which held a Cyriax session on examination and treatment of the shoulder as well as a full conference on soft tissue injury and treatment. This was of special interest to the part of Dr. Balharry’s practice that relates to treatment of back and joint problems with prolotherapy, trigger point injections and Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections.

The second conference, again held in Vancouver, was the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Aesthetic Medicine. Many new techniques of injections were presented as well as the latest trends in aesthetic medicine. There was a big emphasis on body shaping. This probably relates to the surge in obesity but also the increased awareness of body image. Dr. Balharry was particularly interested in a new technology that was presented by Dr. Stephen Mulholland, called BodyTite, which uses radiofrequency in a new way, to reduce fat and tighten skin. The interest was so great, that the Canmore MediSpa has bought this equipment and, once Dr. Balharry has done the necessary training, will be offering this to our clients. We will keep you posted!

PRECEPTORSHIP SAN FRANCISCO – Dr. Aycock

On 29 January 2011, Dr. Rick Balharry travelled to San Francisco for a preceptorship with Dr. Robert Aycock.  Dr. Aycock is a Board Certified plastic surgeon who has won many awards and has had considerable favourable media attention (www.aycockmd.com). The preceptorship covered advanced techniques with the Sciton TRL (Tunable Resurfacing Laser) focusing particularly on the treatment of lines around the lips and eyes.
The Sciton TRL is a versatile laser that allows very precise removal of skin to a level that allows the removal of wrinkles.  With this type of resurfacing, there is a longer recovery time of 5-7 days but the results are dramatic.
Contact Dr. Balharry and he will be able to let you know if you are the right candidate for this procedure after your (complimentary) consultation about your skin.

It’s About Time

The SELPHYL® System nicknamed the “vampire filler” by the media is a novel, simple, reproducible, hypoallergenic, and cost effective treatment.  SELPHYL® is used to harness your own biology and platelets to naturally fill skin depressions, acne scars, wrinkles and folds, rather than using synthetic, plastic, or animal-derived materials. The natural procedure is performed in Dr. Balharry’s office in less than 20 minutes and typically yields 4 cc of product – enough for facial contouring.
Selphyl, the “Vampire Facelift”, was featured on the Rachael Ray Show – October 12, 2010

The SELPHYL® System enables the safe and rapid preparation of autologous Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) and an activated Platelet-rich Fibrin Matrix (PRFM).
Dr. Balharry can apply PRFM to a treatment area of the face or body to stimulate cell proliferation, which promotes volume increase and skin rejuvenation. Check with Dr. Balharry to see if this treatment is right for you.

October 2010

The two day programme provided an international group of speakers presenting the very latest in management and treatment options for varicose veins.
Vein problems are present in a large percentage of the population and can be anything from a cosmetic nuisance to a painful, health threatening disease. The management of varicose veins is constantly changing, hoping to get increasingly better outcomes for our patients. As Dr. Balharry treats varicose veins with surgery and injections, he feels that attending these conferences allow him to offer to his patients the best possible treatment options.

March 2010

On 26 and 27 February 2010, Dr. Rick Balharry attended a seminar on Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Replacement. This 2 day programme was presented by the PCCA Canada who represent the compounding pharmacies in Canada. For this seminar, they brought in some of the top speakers in the area of Human Identical (or bioidentical) Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Dr. Eldred Taylor, from Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, is an obstetrician/gynaecologist who authored the book “Are Your Hormones Making You Sick?” Dr. Taylor did a fascinating talk by looking at the basic hormone physiology, particularly of women, and why bioidentical hormone replacement makes sense.

Dr. Jerilynn Prior is the Director of the BC Centre of the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study and is founder and scientific director of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research in Vancouver. She presented some excellent reports on the effects of hormones on bone, breast tissue and heart disease.

Dr. George Gillson is the President and CEO of Rocky Mountain Analytical laboratory. Dr. Gillson was originally a research chemist who then changed career to medicine at the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary and then later opened and developed the Laboratory. As such, he was able to present issues from the research side as well as from the practical side of patient care.

The focus of the conference was a review of where we stand today particularly in women’s health issues after the release of the Women’s Health Initiative Study that scared everyone on hormone therapy. The report, however, looked at women, many of whom had pre-existing heart disease and were on hormones that are not considered human identical hormones. There is now a lot of evidence relating to safety issues of the Birth Control Pill and the often protective value of some types of hormone replacement particularly with their role in breast cancer and in heart disease.

Dr. Rick Balharry already offers, through his office, the ability to perform saliva hormone testing and stress hormone testing in the saliva which can offer an excellent baseline for treatment of the many symptoms related to these hormones – fatigue, poor sleep, irritability, depression to name but a few. Dr. Balharry will be pleased to share these new thoughts with you in consultation.
