March 2010

On 26 and 27 February 2010, Dr. Rick Balharry attended a seminar on Bioidentical Hormone Therapy Replacement. This 2 day programme was presented by the PCCA Canada who represent the compounding pharmacies in Canada. For this seminar, they brought in some of the top speakers in the area of Human Identical (or bioidentical) Hormone Replacement Therapy.
Dr. Eldred Taylor, from Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, is an obstetrician/gynaecologist who authored the book “Are Your Hormones Making You Sick?” Dr. Taylor did a fascinating talk by looking at the basic hormone physiology, particularly of women, and why bioidentical hormone replacement makes sense.

Dr. Jerilynn Prior is the Director of the BC Centre of the Canadian Multicentre Osteoporosis Study and is founder and scientific director of the Centre for Menstrual Cycle and Ovulation Research in Vancouver. She presented some excellent reports on the effects of hormones on bone, breast tissue and heart disease.

Dr. George Gillson is the President and CEO of Rocky Mountain Analytical laboratory. Dr. Gillson was originally a research chemist who then changed career to medicine at the Department of Medicine at the University of Calgary and then later opened and developed the Laboratory. As such, he was able to present issues from the research side as well as from the practical side of patient care.

The focus of the conference was a review of where we stand today particularly in women’s health issues after the release of the Women’s Health Initiative Study that scared everyone on hormone therapy. The report, however, looked at women, many of whom had pre-existing heart disease and were on hormones that are not considered human identical hormones. There is now a lot of evidence relating to safety issues of the Birth Control Pill and the often protective value of some types of hormone replacement particularly with their role in breast cancer and in heart disease.

Dr. Rick Balharry already offers, through his office, the ability to perform saliva hormone testing and stress hormone testing in the saliva which can offer an excellent baseline for treatment of the many symptoms related to these hormones – fatigue, poor sleep, irritability, depression to name but a few. Dr. Balharry will be pleased to share these new thoughts with you in consultation.
