The Truth About Indoor Tanning: May 2015 Newsletter
The truth about indoor tanning
It's OK to fake your age...and your tan!
Wouldn't it be wise if, when you walked into an indoor tanning salon, they were forced to hang posters warning you of the potential dangers of indoor tanning just like the warning on a packet of cigarettes? Sadly, there is no legislation to enforce this and consumers are being subjected to a new type of sneaky advertising promoting indoor tanning as somewhat of a health benefit.
One in every three cancers diagnosed worldwide is a skin cancer, 80-90% of which are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The most common sources of UV radiation on the skin are the sun and artificial tanning beds. Though skin cancer is preventable and most often treatable, it remains the most common form of cancer*.
This summer, achieve a beautiful, natural looking tan with St.Tropez. This easy to use product line has patented Aromaguard technology that eliminates the self tanning smell, offers a variety of tanning options and is easily affordable.
We offer COMPLIMENTARY consultations to help you find the best St.Tropez to suit your needs. Happy & safe tanning this summer!
Not so long ago, smoking was considered to be OK. In fact, there were TV commercials by doctors promoting certain brands of cigarettes! As knowledge and awareness grew, it became evident that lung cancer was much more common in smokers, prompting the anti-smoking movement and warnings on packages about the dangers of smoking.
Lung cancer is a horrible and fatal disease but this often overshadowed all the other risks related to smoking – chronic bronchitis, emphysema, heart disease. Smokers have a higher incidence of back pain and other non-related cancers. It causes premature aging of tissues such as the skin, causing early wrinkles and lines on the skin.
And so it is with tanning. We are increasingly being made aware of the risks of tanning being a cause of malignant melanoma. This, like lung cancer, is a horrible and fatal disease. It is much more common in people who start tanning young in life and who have frequent exposures to tanning which can be indoor or outdoor tanning, as well as those with a family history of skin cancer.
But, as with smoking, tanning has many other effects on our bodies. There are other forms of skin cancer that can be stimulated by tanning (squamous cell cancer, basal cell cancer). Tanning also has a damaging effect on our skin. To see this, compare the skin on your face with the skin on your buttocks – they are the same age skin but, because your buttocks are not getting daily exposure to UV rays, the skin looks much younger – less discolouration and wrinkles.
Fortunately, we have seen a big reduction in smoking. Let’s hope that we can do the same with skin cancer. We recommend good sun protection when outdoors with either clothing or sunscreens. The mineral powders such as Jane Iredaleare very effective sun blocks and can be worn daily. Many cancer groups and medical associations have come out strongly against indoor tanning, especially in young people and we support this concept.
It is nice, however, to have a little colour on our skin in the summer months. What we recommend is a topical tan (not tropical). St. Tropez has a line of products to apply to the skin that gives a very natural tan colour to the skin, can be applied quite easily and does not carry the risks associated with tanning. So, we encourage you to safely enjoy your summer.
