Collagen: What is it? Why is it important? December 2015 Newsletter

collagen

noun, Biochemistry.
1. any of a class of extracellular proteins abundant in higher animals, especially in the skin, bone, cartilage, tendon, and teeth, forming strong insoluble fibers and serving as connective tissue between cells, yielding gelatin when denatured by boiling*.

Why is it important? Collagen helps to give strength to various structures of the body and also protects structures like the skin by preventing absorption and spreading of pathogenic substances, environmental toxins, micro - organisms and cancerous cells. Collagen protein is the cement that holds everything together.

How does it relate to aging? As we age, collagen production slows and the integrity of the cell structure decreases. Therefore, our skin starts to lose laxity, becomes thin and appears dull.

What can be done to reverse this process? Aside from wearing sunscreen, leading a healthy lifestyle and consuming food rich in vitamins and anti-oxidants, it is possible to stimulate the reformation of collagen, essentially "kicking it back into gear". Specifically, and to aid in this process, newer fillers such as Sculptra by Galderma aims at stimulating your own collagen while providing you with natural looking softness and volume, and with more longevity than traditional hyaluronic fillers.

From the desk of Dr. Balharry...

Recently I went on a training session for an interesting new filler called Sculptra. Most of the fillers that we use, like Restylane or Juvederm, are made of hyaluronic acid (HA). These are beautiful fillers that are versatile and safe and are by far the most commonly used for volume restoration in the face and elsewhere. The limitations of the HA fillers are few but, in certain areas they do have their limits.

When we need to fill large areas, such as the temples or the cheeks, it will take a lot of HA to fill these areas, which relates to cost. Also, in some areas, like the hands, the HA fillers can make the skin look translucent. Depending on the type of HA filler and the location that is injected in to, the effect will wear off usually in less than 2 years and often much quicker in places like the lips.

Sculptra is a biocompatible (does not harm the body) and biodegradable (broken down by the body) filler that is derived from fruit acids. It works in the deep layers of the skin to build new collagen. This results in a very natural build up of tissue in our skin that gives a very natural result. The bonus is that it will last in excess of two years.

The procedure for injection is very similar to the injection of HA. The difference is that, to see the final result will take four to six weeks so you have to be patient. But the patience is certainly worth it.

During this training session, I had my own face injected with Sculptra. I found the procedure only mildly uncomfortable and I am already seeing positive changes in my aging face and skin.

I now have Sculptra at the MediSpa. I would be happy to discuss Sculptra with you to see if it is the right treatment for your skin.

Gina's Skin Care Tips...

Primers are the latest must have when it comes to skin care. Although primers are nothing new in the skin care and make up industry, they are just now really getting the recognition that they deserve. Primers are designed to even skin tone, smooth skin texture and improve the appearance of fine lines and pores. They can be used alone for a healthy natural look or in preparation to your make up application. Primers can also offer special features depending on your skin concern such as redness relief, oil control, and anti-aging  just to name a few. New to the Canmore MediSpa is the Hydrablur primer from Dermalogica. H2ORelease Complex and Abyssinian Oil provides intense, sustained-release moisturization. Unique, microencapsulated colour technology provides light coverage and balances skin tone. Mushroom extract helps to refine pores without drying out the skin. A must have product for the extreme winter conditions we experience here in Alberta.

Also, be sure to check out our limited edition Dermalogica Holiday gift sets for 2015! Choose from Dermalogica’s ‘Our Favorires’ kit, consists of Dermalogica’s top 4 picks suitable for all skin types; or the Body Therapy Essentials kit. Makes an ideal gift or stocking stuffer.
